Less Sleep May Result in Premature Death

It might come as an eye-opener to those who believe that sleeping less or for long hours causes no harm. Although, modern day pressures, stress and other factors like long-working hours, shift jobs, lifestyle irregularities etc have disturbed the sleeping patterns of the people, but according to the study carried out by the team from the University of Warwick and the Federico II University medical school in Naples, short sleep of less than six hours might cause a premature death while long sleep also can lead to other health complications.

The research that analyzed data from 16 different studies across Europe, the US and Asia over 25 years, covering more than 1.3m people and more than 100,000 deaths, found that consistently sleeping for less than six hours a night can cause early death while excessive sleeping can be a potential risk factor to several underlying ailments.

The research found that people who sleep for less than 6 hours a night are 12% more likely to die early over a period of 25 years as compared to those who have a healthy sleep of 6-8 hours of sleep.

Experts say that the duration of sleep should be regarded as the additional risk factor or a risk indicator to various health ailments. Various researches have also shown that less or lack of sleep may result in heart disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure etc.
