How to Stop Receiving Promotional Calls/Messages on Your Mobile

In a view to respect the privacy of every telecom user TRAI has introduced National Customer Preference Registry (NCPR), the erstwhile NDND (National Do Not Disturb) registry, which allows all the telecom users to exercise preferences/restrictions on all the promotional calls/messages they are receiving on their mobile. Below is the procedure for registration to block all the promotional calls/messages on your mobile number (common for every telecom user).

In order to stop receiving commercial calls and messages you will have two options:

  • Dialing toll free number 1909; or
  • Sending SMS to 1909

In both the options you will come across two preferences – Fully Blocked Category and Partially Blocked category

1. If you choose Fully Blocked Category, you will stop receiving all the promotional calls and messages, except the transactional messages (Messages from banks, e-ticketing, DTH service providers etc.)

2. If you opt for Partially Blocked category, you can receive calls/messages from the preferred categories and the rest will be blocked. As of now, there are seven categories as stipulated by TRAI

  1.  Banking/Insurance/Financial products/credit cards
  2. Real Estate
  3. Education
  4. Health
  5. Consumer goods and automobiles
  6. Communication/Broadcasting/Entertainment/IT
  7. Tourism and Leisure

Registration by dialing 1909

Dial 1909 (toll free number) from your mobile phone. You will be directed to choose between customer care executive or Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS). Better to go with the executive to have some interactive conversation. By informing him you can either opt for fully blocked or partially blocked categories.

Registration by sending SMS

  • To register in Fully Blocked category, send SMS ‘START 0’ to 1909
  • For Partially blocked category, send SMS ‘START <option number>’ to 1909
    • Example: If you want to receive calls/messages only related to education, send SMS as START 3 to 1909 (option numbers as mentioned above)

In the same category you can also opt for multiple preferences through a single SMS. Send ‘START <option1, option2,…>’ to 1909

    • For example, if you want to receive calls/messages related to banking, real estate, and tourism – send SMS as START 1,2,7 to 1909 (Option numbers as mentioned above)

Things to note

    • After registration you will receive a SMS within 24 hours confirming the preferences exercised by you along with your unique registration number. To report any issues you can use that registration number for further reference.
    • After registration it takes 7 days for the service to get activated.
    • In case, if you already registered with NDNC (previous version of NCPR), no need to re-register, as your registration will be continued under fully blocked category. However, if you want to choose partially blocked category, you need to register again
    • Users who are not registered can identify commercial calls and messages. All the promotional numbers will start with ‘140’ and messages will have the header like XY-NZZZZZ (a special series allotted to telemarketers)
