When stressed out, people always crave for a cup of good flavored tea to loosen up and lower their stress levels. Especially, having a cup of green tea is more refreshing which also ensures certain health benefits. Among different varieties of tea types, Green tea is considered as a better choice specifically for people who suffer with blood pressure and diabetes. Diabetes is very common these days and research studies have found that having three to four cups of green tea per day may reduce the complications associated with this condition. It is not good idea to rely on green tea alone to reduce diabetic symptoms as it also requires proper diet and daily regular exercise to go with it.

Effect of Green Tea on Different Diabetic Types

When compared to type 2 diabetes, type 1 is more complicated and not easily curable as it is associated with the critical organ called pancreas in the body. When this large gland behind the stomach stops making insulin person having these symptoms suffers from various life threatening complications. In such cases the patient has to be treated with daily dose of insulin otherwise he/she may develop long term health complications. Green tea consumption may have very little effect to revert back such symptoms because type 1 diabetes is complicated and is not easily preventable.
Contrary to that, type 2 is the common type which develops mostly from genetic condition and life style habits. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes is high among people with poor nutritional diets, obese with insufficient physical activity and lazy lifestyles. Many medical studies have suggested that people who consume three to four cups of green tea per day will less likely develop type 2 diabetes than those who take less than one cup per week. Apart from acting on symptoms of stress & diabetes, green tea also helps to reduce obesity in overweight people.

Effect of Green Tea on Blood Sugar Levels

Patients suffering from diabetes have a chronic medical condition that they cannot produce enough insulin to regulate glucose levels in blood. Due to this effect, their blood sugar levels are high when compared to normal people. Basically, green tea contains high amounts of poly-phenols ( Epigallocatechin gallate – EGCG) which are known to have antioxidant properties to activate the insulin and help body metabolize sugar better. When compared to other types of tea, green tea contains higher level of polyphenols because they are prepared from unfermented leaves.

Necessary Precautions to Take While Having Green Tea

While it is good to consume two or three cups of tea everyday, diabetic patients who are on insulin have to carefully monitor their blood sugar levels as sometimes there is a chance of lowering the levels below normal limits. Having blood sugar levels below normal limits will also lead to a dangerous medical condition called Hypoglycemia. Patients who are already suffering with this health condition need to consult doctor if they are planning to include green tea in their diet.
