A smartphone refers to the mobile PC, technically loaded with more features than a regular phone. Most of the smartphones have operating system Smart phone(iOS, Android & Windows ) run by processors (MediaTek and Snapdragon ) and have ability to make voice and video calls communicating through 1G, 2G (edge), 3G, present its 4G based on VolTe (Voice Over Long Term Evolution).

A smartphone is a mobile phone with highly advanced features. A typical smartphone has a high-resolution touch screen display of 5 inch (standard size), WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, web browsing capabilities, and the ability to handle high end applications.

Over past few years, technology has increased and smartphones have become more advanced. Smartphone provide flexibility to do everything that you want like shopping, watch movies, book movie tickets or cab, chat with friends on social media etc. In recent times, people are getting more accustomed to smatphones because some of the hig-end phones are featuring 4GB of DDR4 RAM which more than the RAM available on a normal laptop, screen resolution which is more than a TV and high pixel camera replacing DSLR.

Operating System of SmartPhones

There are many OS for smartphone like iOS, Android, Symbian, Plam web OS, Blackberry OS but only iOS and Android are ruling most of the smartphone market.

 

Apple OS/iOS : This operating system is exclusive only for apple products (iphone, ipad, ipod touch and Apple TV). Originally it was called i phone OS but due to usage in other apple products they renamed it as Apple iOS in 2010. Current iOS version is v9.3. iOS 9 started in 2015 with the release of the iphone 6s and 6s plus. Apple has its own personal assistance “Siri” which is considered to be an advanced voice recognition application.

Android OS : This operating system is launched by Google and based on Linux. Unlike iOS Android is open source mobile operating system and is seen in many mobile companies handsets.
Android latest version is Android 7 (Nought) and has personal assistance (Google assistance) launched with new series of Google smart phone Google pixel.

Highest Selling Smartphone in India

Samsung
South Korean company Samsung has highest smartphone market in India with good quality products at affordable prices. Samsung is a top selling smartphone company in India with 25.1% share of Indian smartphone market and with 10.9% sequential growth and 15% growth in last year .
This South Korean company has highest selling smartphones, running on Android platform with updated versions of J2, J5, J7 released in end of 2016 sold over 6.2 million units in 2016 and over 6 million units during the first quarter of 2017. Its closest competitors Lenovo, Xiaomi and ViVo all together have just over 10 to 20 percent of the market shares

Xiaomi
Chinese (Beijing) Smartphone brand Xiaomi had second place in Indian smartphone market during first quarter in 2017 with 14 % of market share, 40% of shipments and growth of 3% compared to last year numbers. The shipment includes 4 million units during third quarter and 3 million in Q4 sale 2016.

Vivo
Vivo another new Chinese company (Dongguan) is on third position with 10.5% of Indian market share, sold over 3 million devices in Q1 sale of 2017 including Vivo V5, Vivo y21, Vivo y53. The numbers are up from last years which is only 2.1 million units.

Lenovo
Lenovo headquarter in china (Beijing) is on 4th position in Indian Smart phone market with 10.3% growth over last quarter. Though it had some negative remarks over its security, the phone did well with 9% market share in India. It sold approximately 2.6 million units in last quarter of 2016, with new budget phones released into markets like Lenovo vibe k5 note, Moto G and G4 plus.

Oppo
Oppo manufactured based company in China (Dongguan) stood 5th during last quarter and in 3rd position in 4th quarter of 2016 in Indian smartphone market,. It covers 9.1% of smartphone market share in India with sales around 2.5 million units. The most popular product release from Oppo was Oppo A57.

Mobile Operating Systems in India (2012-2016)

By the the end of year 2016, Android has become popular operating system for smartphones in India with more than 75 percent of the market share while Windows OS had less than a five percent share. There was a great transition in Indian OS market starting from 2012. In 2012, Symbian OS has more than 65% while android had only 2 to 5% of market share.

Because of its popularity and better features, Android OS is adopted by many other companies in the Indian smartphone industry, where the operating system held over 80 percent of the smart phone users. In U.S alone the market share of Android has increased from 87.7 million in 2014 to 107.7 million in 2016. However, its closest competitor in the global operating system market Apple iOS, had only about 18.3 percent of the market share by the end of fourth quarter 2016. One main reason for its less adoption in Indian market is its restriction to Apple devices.
