Of late, Indian companies have started expecting new job applicants to already posses the right set of soft skills from the day one they join the company instead of training new employees on these skills. According to NASSCOM, every year over 3 million people (graduates and post-graduates) are added to the workforce in India. Of these, only 25% of technical graduates and 10-15% of other graduates are considered employable by IT and ITES sectors. Even after employing these graduates, most companies have to spend considerable amount of time and invest heavily in training so as to develop the skills required by the industry. Ultimately, with the talent shortage resulting in increased salaries and high attrition rates, experts cautioned that India could soon lose its competitive advantage in the IT sector. Already India has lost a lot of market share in call center market to countries in Asia, Europe and Latin America

Most of the parents have a preconceived notion that most expensive/ luxurious schools will teach good soft skills to their children and hence indulge in paying huge fees to these schools. It has been observed that if the parents are with strong values, integrity and positive attitude, they can inculcate in their children a set of solid values like fairness, honesty, discipline, justice, integrity etc. right from their childhood. Even the school in which a person has been brought up, also influences his soft skills, if the school itself is with bad environment or bad culture, how can one expect to have good soft skills in a person who has been brought up in it.

When a person is looking for a job those with good upbringing will possess a strong set of soft skills that helps them to get selected for good jobs. Remember any thing that can be bought with money is a commodity. Sending a kid to the most expensive school is not enough.

The attitude of ‘Charity’ in the mind of a person starts from his home. Similarly, a person’s behavior and development of his soft skills starts from his home right from his childhood. How good or how bad a person’s soft skills are? mostly depends upon how well he has been brought up by his family members and the society to which he belongs.

Parents ignore the fact that it is their fundamental duty to instill a strong set of soft skills in their children right from their childhood by educating them about the acceptable attitudes and behaviors to be followed in the society. Thus, parents have to realize that proper upbringing helps in building the right foundation for their children in developing good soft skills.

So, good family upbringing plays a major role in helping the development of good soft skills and teaching to act appropriately in the society. Probably, the strongest influence in a person’s life and on his soft skills is the family he grew up in. The birth order, the personality of parents, treatment from siblings, the socioeconomic status of family, and education will shape the soft skills of a person.

If the person had no good relations in between and among the siblings of his family, he automatically carries the same to outside the home, may be to educational places and work places etc., which leads to poor soft skills. On the other hand, when a person has good communication and good relations in and among the family members or the siblings, then he tends to practice good communication skills, a positive attitude, and good negotiation skills etc., which are a part of soft skills.

In some families, parents never cared for their children and they grew up not knowing much about the outside world. As a result, the kids do not even know how to behave in the society and lack in their soft skills. On the other hand, when the parents care about their children and teach them how to behave in the society, how to talk with the people, how to understand the people, and how to tackle the hard situations etc., it has a positive impact on the kids. The children will develop a positive attitude, a tendency of facing challenges and builds empathy, which slowly develops a set of good soft skills for the child as he grows up in his life.

It has been also said that, confident and skillful parents adopting a ‘tough love’ approach to parenting in the upbringing of a child by balancing the affection and discipline seems to be most effective in terms of generating the characteristics such as purpose, self-regulation and empathy, which are considered to be good soft skills for a person. Parents cannot ignore their responsibility of giving a good upbringing to their kids. So, every parent must not forget that it is their duty to bring up their children not only giving good education but also good kind of attitude and culture.

When a child has a good family upbringing along with a good school education, that child is likely to do very well in life. Children who have been molded well by their parents & teachers, whose rational mind has been strengthened and good character has been build, can look forward to a bright career and contribute significantly to their employers success. Such individuals are valued greatly by employers.

Brown rice almost got disappeared in last few years with invention of processing machine for white rice. Today, with increasing cases of obesity, cancer and diabetes in India, people are returning to brown rice. Read on to know more about brown rice and its advantages

Earlier (for thousands of years), everyone used to eat brown rice until the invention of processing machine for white rice. People started using white rice because it is tasty, can be stored for longer time than brown rice, and more over it takes less time to cook. Though white rice is popular, it has its own disadvantages.

Disadvantages of white rice

White rice is digested quickly, that is, it breaks down into glucose quickly causing drastic reaction with insulin, so it is not suggested for diabetic patients. Besides, White rice has high value of Glycemic index (70), when it is consumed in more quantities it causes diabetes.

It has low nutritional value.

When people started using white rice in 1897, it was found that, consuming white rice is the main reason for cause of deadly disease beriberi, due to lack of vitamin B1 in white rice, which is removed during processing. So Government of America, compelled companies to retain back naturally occurring vitamins (during processing) in white rice in order to obtain enriched rice (but no nutrients that has fiber).

Brown rice

Brown rice is, rice which is hulled (the covering husk is removed) leaving the outer layer of the bran on the grain. Brown rice contains all the edible parts of rice. At present, the cost of brown rice is very high as all the factories need to replace machinery to make (process) brown rice as all them are preoccupied with equipment to process only white rice.

Difference between brown rice and white rice and parboiled rice

Brown Rice: Rice undergoes variety of processes before it gets ready for cooking. After harvesting, seeds are rolled through huller/husker for milling to remove outer grain husk. After this process, brown rice is ready. It is easy and simple.

White rice: To get white rice from brown rice, the inner part of grain, germ and the inner covering of grain, husk (bran) are removed, then grain is polished with glucose or talc. The complete pounding and polishing (refining) that takes place to convert brown rice into white rice destroys 67% of the vitamin B3, 80% of the vitamin B1, 90% of the vitamin B6, half of the manganese, half of the phosphorus, 60% of the iron, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids.

Parboiled rice: Parboiled rice is another type of rice obtained by a process of soaking, which is followed by pressure steaming and then drying of paddy form of rice. This process is carried out before milling. The rice obtains light yellow color. It has 80% of nutrients of brown rice.

Benefits of Brown rice

It has more nutrients compared to white rice because of the presence of bran layer. This layer has digestible fiber along with minerals and vitamins that are absent in white rice.

Brown rice is rich in manganese and provide 88% daily value of manganese. Manganese used in producing energy and Antioxidant protection.

As brown rice is good source of fiber and selenium, it helps in prevention of cancer.

Daily intake of brown rice reduces the cholesterol.

A study published in the July 2004 issue of the American Journal of Gastroenterology revealed that taking brown rice is helpful for women to prevent` gallstones, as it has insoluble fiber.

Brown rice is the complete source, which has one of the most essential amino acid present in any vegetarian food.

Vital vitamin E components and many valuable nutrients are present in brown rice.

Brown rice should not be treated as farmer’s food or animal feed because it has many nutritional values. However, white rice is easy to cook and looks pleasant it is not suggested for good health. It is better to switch back to brown rice to avoid the biggest killers of present generation such as obesity, diabetes, and cancer to have healthier and longer life.

People generally get emotional for various minor or major illnesses. People try to put patient in panic about the disease a person is suffering from. People with lower socio education are involved in this. The main reason for poverty in India is health problems. As poor people and middle class people lack medical awareness, they get exploited when they are caught by health problems. A person need to be socially educated in order to have knowledge on different types of diseases and for which diseases a doctor must be consulted.

Health conditions that can be treated at home

All diseases are not dreadful. Few diseases can be cured at home with few changes in diet and taking rest. Preventive measures and medicine can be prepared at home itself. Some health problems that can be treated at home without going to hospital are Headaches, Poor digestion cause stomachache, Common cold, viral fever, small cuts, injuries etc. People try to contact the doctor even for these minor problems and pay huge amount of fees. These ailments get cured by themselves, but it takes some time. It seems to be ridiculous for an educated person even after knowing these facts tries to consult doctor for minor diseases.

Diseases that need doctor’s prescription

Some diseases can be treated after the prescription given by the doctor. People should follow the strict instructions given by doctors. If these diseases are not identified at initial stages, then there is possibility that a person can die. Some diseases that can be treated after going to hospital once for prescription are Measles, Small pox, Jaundice, Hepatitis, Malaria, Sinus congestion, Piles, and Disc prolapse.

Diseases that require doctor’s supervision for long time

Some diseases are caused through hereditary and they trouble the patient forever. There are some diseases, which need to be always supervised periodically by the doctor, and proper medication should be taken for whole life. If the patient discontinues the medication at any point of time, then it may lead to death. Some diseases that take more time to get cured are Diabetes, Hyper tension, Migraine, Allergic asthma, AIDS, cancer, Arthritis of different kinds and paralysis.

Diseases that require Hospitalization immediately

There are some situations or diseases, which require hospitalization immediately when recognized. If not hospitalized in time, it may lead to death of person. Some diseases for which hospitalization is required are accidents caused due to collision of vehicles, when drowned in water, when met with fire accident, heart attack, Swine flu, dengue fever, and Tuberculosis.

According to Ancient Indian Hindu culture, there are four stages of a person’s life which are known as Ashramas. They are Brahmachari (student), Grihasta (Householder), Vanaprasta (ascetic in semi retirement) and Sannyasi ( a renounced person in full retirement). Each stage has different principles. The four stages are considered as stages of Preparation, Production, Service and Retirement.

Brahmacharya (celibate)

The first stage is “Brahmacharya” includes a student and generally lasts for 25 years of age from birth. The responsibility of a student is to study. For a Brahmachari, celibacy (maintaining singleness) should be strength, discipline should be the standard, service to Guru should be duty and concentration in studies should be the profession. The young male leaves home and stays with teacher and gains both spiritual and practical knowledge. He is trained for his future profession, in addition for his family, social and religious life ahead.

Grihastaashrama (House holder)

The second stage is “Grihasta” which implies a House-holder generally between 25 and 50 years of age. This stage begins when a man gets married, and takes up the responsibility of earning for sustenance and supports his family. At this stage, the activity of wealth is very essential. The Grihasta earns his livelihood by doing work that matches his group, raising children, and performs religious or spiritual practices to help others. Usually people of other three stages heavily depend on the Grihasta for support and maintenance required to perform their respective duties. In real life, people love this ashrama, so Grihastha stage continues for whole life.

Vanaprasta ashrama ( the anchorite)

Vanaprasta is the third stage of senior advisor generally between 50 and 72 years of age. This stage begins when his responsibility as a householder ends, become a grandfather, his children become adults, and have well settled lives of their own. At this age, he should abandon all physical, material and sexual pleasures. He should retire from his social and professional life and should spend his time in prayers. He should maintain little contact with the family. This kind of life is actually very harsh for an aged person. Today, this stage is almost extinct.

Sannyasa ashrama ( the renounced)

Sannyasi is the fourth stage meaning Ascetic or Solitaire life, indicating complete detachment from materialistic pleasures including the essential requirements of living. This is the last stage, generally after 72 years of age. At this stage, a man should be completely devoted to God. He has no home, no attachment, and has abandoned all desires, fears and ambitions, duties and responsibilities. He is basically combined with God, all his relationships are broken, and his sole tries to attain moksha. No one is promoted to become a ‘Sannyasi’ without going through one’s natural feelings of the three previous Ashramas. Person who escapes from marriage (Grihastashrama) is considered as a coward quitting the battle field.

The focus of brahmachari is on healthy, positive training and discipline, learning about spiritual aspects, community, and family life. The focus of Grihasta is on giving, living, learning, and to remain loyal in family and community. The focus of vanaprasta is mainly on inner spiritual methods of meditation, contemplation, and prayer. Sannayasi will not have political, professional, or social engagements and becomes an elder teacher of spiritual knowledge. The first stage is a preparation for life whereas the last stage is a preparation for death. Although these stages are mainly designed for the male, females also have an important role to play in each one of them.

Cardiac arrests are taking their toll and the cases are quickly increasing around the world. Heart failure has become one of the top killers of human beings. However, in India even the younger are also becoming victims of this sudden killer. In the last three months, top corporate personalities like R Ravimohan (52), executive director with Reliance Industries and Ranjan Das (42), CEO and MD of SAP India succumbed to cardiac arrest. The worrying factor is, both the victims are health conscious and took care of basic physical fitness even in their busy routine. If not poor physical fitness, what is the cause for these often fatal attacks?

The Cause
Mental stress is one of the major reasons for the deaths at such a younger age due to heart failure. Apart from stress, many other factors may constitute to the heart attack. They include sedentary lifestyle that causes obesity, smoking, blood pressure, and eating habits. It is a point to note that smoking is the main cause for nearly half of the heart attacks. A smoker is four to six times more likely to suffer a heart attack.

The Gene Factor
Even if you are not overweight, follow a strict vegetarian diet, and do not smoke or drink, there are chances of getting struck by heart attack. Scientists recently discovered that genes are also a major contributor to the heart failures among Indians.

According to South Asian Heart Center, Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) that leads to heart attacks is more prevalent in South Asians. When compared to people of other regions, CAD strikes 4 times more in South Asians. It is estimated that India will have 60 percent of the total CAD of the world by 2010. South Asians are vulnerable at younger age where CAD strikes almost 33% earlier. Urban people in India are more likely to suffer heart attacks at an earlier age, often without prior warning or symptoms.

Thus, a family history of heart diseases can help you to understand the vulnerability to heart attacks. So, what we can do to avoid heart attacks?

Build Your Heart Strong
The primary focus of your personal fitness should be on cardiovascular health. Cardiovascular exercises help to reduce high blood pressure levels, increase the quantity of good cholesterol and lower the bad cholesterol. When the primary arteries are partially obstructed, cardiovascular exercises help to form a secondary circulation system.

Involve in at least 40 minutes of vigorous physical activity daily. That Includes climbing stairs, a long stroll after meals, walking, cycling etc.

Eat Healthy
The health of your heart depends on the food you take. So eat healthy to stay healthy. Take food low in saturated fats, and high in monounsaturated fats. Eat green vegetables cooked with small amount of oil. Take brown rice instead of white rice. Take bread made from whole-wheat flour instead of enriched flour white breads. Apart from eating only rice, try other grains like cracked wheat, barley, and quinoa. Choose lean meats such as white meat chicken, lean red meat, or turkey. Instead of drinking juice, eat whole fruit to increase the fiber intake.

Detect the Danger Upfront
The common mistake most healthy people make is they do not screen for heart diseases prior to the attack. Even among the educated, only a few people routinely get screened prior to a cardiac arrest. Heart attack is preventable as well as treatable and testing for this ailment even from a younger age is very important.

Air conditioning systems today can be seen in almost all offices and in many of the residential spaces. Air Conditioners are cooling, heating, ventilating and disinfectant systems that provide health and comfort. However, the common myth among many people is that air conditioners alone provide good indoor air quality, but the fact is that they are neither effective in enhancing the oxygen quantity nor reducing the carbon dioxide levels which are main components of indoor air quality.

Increased levels of carbon dioxide and depletion of oxygen mainly affect indoor air quality. Now a days, indoor air is considered as more concerning health hazard than outdoor air.

Why oxygen levels deplete

Most of the air conditioning systems re-circulate a significant portion of the indoor air to maintain comfort and reduce energy costs. In today’s home or office environment, simply heating, cooling or filtering the dust particles by air conditioners is not enough to ensure a pleasant indoor atmosphere. If temperature is simply adjusted, air is filtered, and recycled it loses oxygen content over a period of time. Exposure to low-level oxygen environment may cause negative impact on health and lowers the operational efficiency.

There will be a significant demand for the indoor oxygen in the closed-door environment, where the air conditioners are running. Oxygen adequacy should be supplemented with outside air. Continuous inflow of up to 10% of fresh, filtered air into an air-conditioning system is required to replenish the required quantity of oxygen.

Why Carbon Dioxide levels increase

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an indoor pollutant emitted by humans as part of human metabolic activity. High levels of Carbon dioxide may cause drowsiness, headaches, or may lower the activity levels of the occupants. The air conditioners do not remove carbon dioxide. High levels of CO2 indoors is an indicator of the inadequacy of outdoor air ventilation relative to indoor occupant density.

To enhance the indoor air quality CO2 level should be reduced. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommend that carbon dioxide levels should not exceed 600 ppm than the outdoor levels in homes, 800 ppm in offices and 1000 ppm in schools.

It’s impossible for the occupants to check how much of this air is simply re-circulated air and how much is fresh air without using any instruments. But the technology today offers many accurate and inexpensive instruments to measure the carbon dioxide levels. Some of these instruments not only measure CO2, but also measure other factors such as temperature, relative humidity and other dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide.

Remember that carbon dioxide is heavier than the oxygen. So make sure that you place the ventilators, which suck out the carbon dioxide and other dust particles at lower level near the floor.

Strategy to improve indoor air quality

Both window and split type air conditioning systems are not effective in ventilation. They should be complemented by exhaust fan and some opened windows to provide enough fresh air. The distribution of air inside the premises can be enhanced using a circulating fan.

Central air-conditioning system is used to control humidity, and deliver fresh air into a building with many rooms. Make sure that each room has sufficient fresh air supply. Use circulating fan to enhance air distribution within the area. Remove if there is any obstruction to the ventilation inlet or outlet.

Some houseplants are known to reduce indoor air pollutants such as volatile organic compounds as well as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Pens are the indispensable friend for any educated person. The writing of a person speaks volumes about him and his personality. The intellectuals take pleasure in their Pens much in the similar way as soldiers take efforts in maintenance of their arms and sportsmen in their sporting gears. Many great ideas and thoughts that changed the course of history have been “penned” down through pens. This simple but wonderful invention of ‘Pen’ has transformed civilization for centuries.

Every craftsman has their tools of trade. Skilled professionals, carpenters, craftsmen give great importance to their tools. In Hindu religion, on the occasion of Dussera, Ayudha Pooja is performed when the tools are worshipped recognizing their importance. People doing skilled work give great importance to this pooja. Pens are also the similar tools for an educated person. However, when an educated person goes to the market to purchase stationery or pens – the merchants do not share the same enthusiasm and care for pens and stationery items. Most of them are focused on a quick sale, stock fast moving items, and just want to make maximum profit.

It is not uncommon to go to several places and come back without finding all the stationery items. It is not uncommon if the trader/shopkeeper treats you like a nuisance customer.

A comfortable pen with smooth ink flow enables the flow of ideas and thinking process. A very bulky pen with rough tip and irregular flow of ink will distract the writer and the writer might loose his concentration. Such pens can also create a lot of inconvenience to students during crucial times like exams.

Having a pen conveys an image of as an intellectual person doing a white collared job. Pen helps in productivity as holding a quality pen stimulates the thinking process and generation of ideas. When we have to take down important notes, information, or when you get sudden idea then a simple pen and a notepad is of great value.

To make your life easy we have identified the major manufacturer websites here. That way you can do your pen search/stationery search online and then you go to the store with the specific information.

Frequently, even college and post graduate and degree holders say that they are going to hospital when they require treatment for minor ailments. This is because of rampant health ignorance and lack of medical awareness. This situation leads to problems to both patients and doctors.

Just we do not take the support of crane for carrying petty things from shop to home, we should not use term hospital for treatment of small health ailments. We take help of different vehicles like passenger auto or goods auto or lorry depending on the amount of luggage. Similarly, depending on intensity and type of medical condition we need to select which place like hospital, clinic, nursing home, polyclinic would provide the best treatment. Minor ailments like injuries, cuts, stomach ache, head ache, etc., can be treated at home itself.

Clinic

Clinic is a small organization which provides health facility to only out patients, in contrast to hospital which provides treatment to both inpatients and outpatients. A person may need to take appointment in order to meet a good established doctor and take treatment as he will be available in clinic for particular timings only. Plus, many doctors only work for a few hours at a certain clinic. At other times they are available at other clinics. Doctors in clinic cures the health condition which do not require surgery. Clinic with the help of diagnostic center where the tests for health conditions are conducted and gives report, provides treatment to most health conditions.

Polyclinic

Polyclinic is a place where wide range of health services for all specializations are available at one place possibly including diagnostics and medical store. It is like local medical super market, as treatment for many medical conditions is available at a single location. But polyclinic do not have major surgical and pre- and post operative care facilities that are provided by a hospital.

Nursing Home

In outskirts and small towns nursing homes act as substitutes for hospitals. They have nursing aids and skilled nurses at all times possibly even, 24 hours a day. It is mainly concentrated for maternity health purposes, as they require infections free environment and special care. Some nursing homes are set up like hospital to provide many medical facilities. They can handle emergency cases and provide treatment for a person who is injured in accident on high way which is not severe. Nursing home is not fully a hospital but has all the basic facilities of hospital.

Diagnostic Center

Diagnostic center is a place where tests for different infections and health conditions are conducted in order to confirm the presence of health ailment. They take samples, conduct tests and finally give report. Based on the results in the report, doctor accurately diagnoses the patient and suggests appropriate medication.

Hospital

Hospital is an organization which provides treatment to patients by specialized staff and nurses to both inpatients and outpatients. Modern-day hospitals are mainly staffed by professional physicians, surgeons, and nurses. Hospitals consist of specialist units such as cardiology or coronary care unit, intensive care unit, neurology, cancer center, obstetrics and gynecology. Hospital is for persons who need to be monitored by doctors regularly.

Types of Hospitals

General Hospital

Intermediate General hospital

Contagious disease hospital

Maternity hospital

Medical hospital

Orthopedic hospital

Pediatric hospital

Clinic or Nursing home or Polyclinic are different categories of medical facilities. Each is designed to handle certain medical situation. Each serves their area in the best way. Choosing one for another will not help the patient and causes nuisance to others. All the organizations have doctors in common. So, doctor sounds better than hospital when going for treatment.

All doctors do not provide treatment for all health conditions. They specialize in a certain area. In each specialization there are two types of doctors, physicians and surgeon.

Physician

An M.B.B.S. doctor who specializes in medicine and acquires an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) degree becomes physician. The job of physician is to understand patient’s problems, study the results of clinical tests, diagnosing the illness and then prescribing the course of treatment. They are not involved in doing surgeries. They are mainly associated with fields of anatomy and physiology.

Surgeon

An M.B.B.S. doctor who specializes in medicine and acquires an M.S. (Master of Surgery)

degree becomes Surgeon. The job of surgeon is to carry out surgeries that involve the cutting of a body, for a specific reason in order to remove a diseased organ or to repair a cut or hole or breakage. They are mainly involved in surgeries of different health problems like General surgery, Surgical gastroenterology, Peripheral vascular surgery , Breast and endocrine surgery, Transplantation, Plastic surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic surgery etc.

These are the basic definitions every one should know regarding medical awareness. You should know, when to consult physician and when to consult surgeon to get treatment for health condition. Choosing one for other creates problems to both patients and doctors.

In winter, the common and sometimes worse skin problem is Dry skin also known as “xerosis” or “asteatosis”. This occurs when environmental humidity is low and can be seen in people of all ages. It mostly affects arms, legs, and sometimes trunk of the body. The problem associated with dry skin is, it causes itching, and it leads scaly and red skin. In order to overcome this problem, the skin must be moist.

When to apply Body lotion?

Body lotion should be applied all over the body immediately after having bath (without rubbing with towel) on water itself, it helps to make the skin softer, smoother and less possible to become dry, cracked and itchy. Apply moisturizer within three minutes after getting out of water as it traps and seals water in the skin.

Moisturizer should be applied in morning after bath and in evening before going to sleep at places where skin is dry and itchy.

Moisturizer is generally applied to face and also can be applied to body. But body lotion should not be applied to face. Both are used to nourish the dry skin.

Types of Body moisturizers

There are four classes of body moisturizers. In decreasing order of moisturization, they are given below

Ointment moisturizers: They have greasy or oily consistency, but have considerable ability to trap moisture in the skin. Best example is Vaseline petroleum jelly.

Oil moisturizers: They are less greasy but still capable of providing nourishment to skin. Examples of oil moisturizers are baby oil, mineral oil, vegetable oil, and bath oil.

Cream moisturizers: They are usually white in colour, but when applied on skin and rubbed, they easily get disappeared. So, don’t give a greasy look. Examples of Cream moisturizers are Vaseline Cream, Nivea, Neutrogena Hand Cream, etc.

Lotion moisturizers: They are usually least greasy, friendly to use and so they are popular. They are composed of oily chemicals suspended in water or alcohol. Examples of Lotion Moisturizers are Vaseline Intensive Care, Neutrogena, etc.

Ingredients of Moisturizers

Few main ingredients of body lotion are

Water: It is the main ingredient of moisturizer and is present in more amount. It provides moisture to skin.

Cynergy TK, Phytessence Wakame and Coenzyme Q10: These help for the growth of collagen in the skin, which is used to keep skin in condition.

Lanolin: This helps to retain moisture in skin and provides a greasy feel.

Tretinoin: It is a form of vitamin A which helps in nourishing and giving smooth and glowing appearance to skin.

So, before buying moisturizer or body lotion select the one that is suitable to the skin type, which gives best result and fits your budget too!

Email Security:Email is inherently not secure since SMTP does not encrypt messages. Messages sent through SMTP contain information about the computer that it sent from, and the email program that was used. The POP and IMAP protocols do not encrypt the username and password you used to login. The email messages you send may be saved unexpectedly and indefinitely and may be read by unknown persons as a result.

How Emails Works?
Emails follow the simple post office methodology while sending the emails. Computers are like “post offices”, and the “Simple Mail Transport Protocol” (SMTP) is the “procedure” which an “email post office” uses to figure out where to send the letter next. An email program like Outlook or Thunderbird talks to the server directly using SMTP. Web-based interface like GMail or Yahoo! Communicate with the Internet using HTTP. In case the sender’s server cannot contact the recipient’s server directly, it tries to contact the backup servers and even if that isn’t successful, it queues the message and tries again later.

There are really only 2 languages that email computers understand for message retrieval- Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) and Post Office Protocol (POP). The email client programs talk directly to the server using IMAP or POP whereas the webmail clients talk to the server using HTTP and the server replies in POP or IMAP.

So, How I Can Secure My Emails?
To secure your emails, take the basic precautions as explained below.

To make an email secure use a secure email client like Bat, Thunderbird, or even Outlook Express.

Read email in plain text and do not open an attachment especially if it is a .exe file.

Use free webmail accounts for subscriptions and postings and when spam does start getting through dump that address and get a new one.

Use additional multi-layered defenses like anti spyware/ adware to scan your system for Trojans that have crept through and a firewall that will prevent unauthorised applications from connecting to the Internet.

You can make Outlook Express (or any mail client that supports S/MIME) provide encryption, if you have a Digital certificate, but it is expensive for users of personal email.

What is PGP (Pretty Good Privacy)?
Pretty Good Privacy, originally created by Philip Zimmermann in 1991 provides cryptographic privacy and authentication to increase the security of email communications. It supports message authentication and integrity checking. There is no known method, which will allow a person or group to break PGP encryption by cryptographic or computational means.

Various Services to Increase Email Security:There are many services, which are currently in use in the market to prevent email spam, spoofing, and other email security threats. The below listed services are popularly known for its effective security measures and its features.

Google Postini Services:Filters out all messaging threats like spam and viruses before they reach the network. It also helps to stop phishing, denial of service (DoS), spam, directory harvest attacks (DHA), viruses, and other attacks. Even if your email servers go down with spooling guarantees email arrives. 99.99% availability for message processing and has a tremendous capacity to handle billions of transactions a day.

Sophos Security and Data Protection:Relies on remotely monitored, managed appliances, offers easy-to-use protection for groupware (including Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes) and UNIX gateway protection. Offers best protection and high performance with Sender Genotype technology and SXL real-time updates since they have been included in their email solutions. Receive free, constant, automatic SophosLabs™ updates, upgrades for new releases, and gain access to a 24/7 in-house technical support with no hidden costs.

Webroot E-Mail Security SaaS:Blocks spam efficiently. Protects against backscatter and prevents from disturbing images. Helps in neutralizing Distributed Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, and terminates Directory Harvest Attacks (DHA).

VIPRE AntiVirus + AntiSpyware: Does not slow your computer down like older traditional anti virus programs while still providing high performance security. It also delivers comprehensive security against today’s blended malware threats for email protection, highly complex viruses, and spyware.

Sonic WALL Email Security:Offers protection against both inbound and outbound viruses and spyware. It also includes several templates and databases. It comes with SonicWALL’s Time Zero Virus Technology, which uses heuristic statistical methodology and virus outbreak responsive techniques. Ability to prevent DHA (Directory Harvest Attack), DoS (Denial of Service) attacks, and provides zombie detection to check whether your computer is a part of a botnet.

McAfee Email Security Service: comprehensive e-mail filtering is provided and it is compatible with all e-mail platforms. Web-based interface helps you configure your policy, manage the users from an administrator’s point of view, review quarantines, and display reports.

eCipher Pro-Easy Email Encryption: Encrypt email and attachments. Works with standalone email programs like Microsoft Outlook™, Thunderbird™, Eudora™ and other email clients. Not just that it also works with Gmail™, Yahoo! Plus™, AOL, Comcast, Mac and other webmail accounts.

Outlook Email Security Update:Meant for Outlook 98 and Outlook 2000. Enable to disable many features that allow viruses to spread easily. In Microsoft Exchange Server environments, administrators can customize the security settings whereas in Outlook 2002, end users can allow access to particular file attachment types that the security features normally block.

Network protection from SmoothZap: Incorporates MailShell spam detection software that detects 99% of spam email. Analyzes email based on its content, sender reputation and unusual formatting, which are characteristic of spam. Viruses are blocked at the network perimeter, on the firewall, rather than on the mail servers and user PCs. Using SmoothZap as a mail relay provides a layer of isolation between any mail server and the Internet, with no directly open ports between the two. Spam and virus levels are recorded and analyzed as percentages of overall email. Automatically take BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) of both incoming and outgoing email so that an archive of all email is kept.

Shortlist the email security services based on your requirements. Parameterize your required features and cross verify based on your specifications. You can get back to us, for any help on this.
