Childhood and Career in Medicine
Swami Sivananda underwent a formal medical training at the Medical School in Tanjore within the Madras Presidency and received a degree of M.B., C.M., which was the standard medical degree of those days. Upon graduation, he worked as a doctor in British Malaya, where he earned a good reputation for selflessly serving the poor and the needy. However, he knew that the body was not the only part of the body that needed healing; it also needed mind and soul guidance. The dawn of this realisation inspired him to abandon his medical profession and devote himself completely to spiritual life, taking up yoga, Vedanta, and selfless service.
