Mindful Decision-Making: Making Choices That Align With Your Values

We all grow up with some set of values in our lives. The values we hold were passed down by our elders in our families, society, and the various institutions we became a part of while growing up. Value addition is a constant phenomenon that never ceases.

If we keep an open mind, we can keep learning and adding to the value system. However, as we grow up, we face different adversities that challenge the value system present within us. This is where we need to be proactive and make choices that align with our value system instead of choosing practices that create a rift between our minds and the value system.

It is significant to retain our values. Because these help us hold on to our identities and keep us from transforming into lower beings without a greater purpose in life. All the values we hold dear to our hearts can create the difference between a human and a monster. It is natural to make mistakes as normal human beings, but accepting your mistakes and inculcating the lessons learned from those mistakes into our lives helps us retain our human values.

Making an important decision that aligns with our values is a matter of choice. If we choose to intentionally reflect our values instead of impulsiveness and superficiality, we will be free from any conflict of interest.

How to stick to personal values?
To remain steadfast in your values, you should know them first and practice them through your deeds. You must understand why they are important and why you wish to hold on to them. Journaling helps realize the meaning of personal values and provides them with a concrete form. Reflect on your values to find out if there are any that you are not practicing, plan to practice it unwaveringly.

Being patient, consistent, and seeking support from like-minded people can go a long way in holding on to your values. Consider your time and passion before investing time. This will give you a clear idea of whether you adhere to your values in your decision-making process.

How to calm down and not be impulsive
Deciding on your impulse will more often than not get you in trouble. Impulsiveness comes from feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or highly irritated in reaction to a situation. Someone who practices mindfulness will never make an impulsive decision. Because he/she can judge the situation calmly and thus respond to it accordingly.

Staying focused on the issue will keep you from making impulsive choices. Sometimes, people have past trauma related to impulsive behavior. It is important to address the trauma so that you can get rid of negative impulses and establish a balance between the outer and inner world.

Exercising self-compassion can help you to deal with impulsiveness which will help in developing a clear understanding of personal values and adhering to them.
