Will Indian Universities Survive In The Age Of AI?
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing education worldwide. Its impact is already clear as people find innovative ways to learn almost anything. In India, this effect is likely to be quicker, more uneven, and deeper than elsewhere. Millions of students enter the sphere of higher education each year. The standard academic system will need to meet massive demand, growing expectations, and inconsistent quality. AI will not only disrupt Indian education but also highlight the gaps in its structure that have been concealed for several decades.
A key encounter that will be obvious is the mismatch between scale and aspiration. India produces millions of graduates annually. However, only a few are fortunate enough to get a high-quality education and meaningful jobs in their career. With the introduction of AI, or Artificial Intelligence, this division may be raised further. Top apprentices can access several advanced AI tools to enhance their learning and skills. While average students, particularly relying on outdated systems, may risk falling further behind.
One of the major issues in India is its preference for or emphasis on rote learning. A lot of Tier 2 and Tier 3 academic institutions still give undue importance to memorization, standardized exams, and outdated curricula. Such a model is essentially incompatible with the very essence of AI. In a world where information is dynamic and knowledge is almost instantly accessible, where AI can produce exam-ready answers to questions in a matter of seconds, the whole concept and practice of memorization loses its meaning. The age-old process or cycle of studying, memorizing, and appearing in exams becomes irrelevant, thus collapsing the fundamental model that is still operative in most Indian universities.
This problem is especially noticeable in India’s engineering education. India produces a huge number of engineering graduates annually. And most are from premier institutions affiliated with the “All India Council for Technical Education”. Nevertheless, only a handful of them have any practical, job-ready skills. With AI tools increasingly taking care of entry-level coding and a wide range of routine and repetitive technical tasks, there is now a lower demand for fresh graduates in various IT roles. The once-reliable academic pipeline, from getting a degree to availing training and getting employment, is fast breaking down.
It is imperative to note that the influence of artificial intelligence is going to be felt in a diverse way across various academic fields and institutions. For instance, the Tier 1 institutions like Indian Institutes of Management, Indian Institutes of Technology, and the Indian Institute of Science are likely to appear even stronger. The brand value they have, together with their research funding, alumni networks, and industry connections, efficiently positions them to grow and thrive. Alternatively, most Tier 2 colleges, such as state universities and mid-level private colleges, will face a solemn turning point. Hence, they need to integrate AI fast into their brochure. Furthermore, they need to accentuate employability and even develop stronger industry ties. If they fail to do so, they can become irrelevant within the next 10 years.
