Six Seasons – Indian Calendar

()

A total of six seasons are there in the Indian calendar corresponding to the seasons in India. The seasons in India are unique and 6 in number due to the monsoon effect. Since thousands of years, Indians have been following their unique calendar. This is used for observing various auspicious days and celebrating festivals which are many times based on weather conditions.

Vasanth Ritu
The first season is Vasanth ritu, which is spring. A pleasant climate and blooming flowers are the striking characteristics of Vasanth ritu. The festival of Vasant Panchami in 2025 falls on January 29th, which is also the day the season begins. Vasanth ritu stretches till the fourth week of March. Holi, Ugadi, Rama Navami, and Vasant Panchami are a few festivals celebrated in Vasanth ritu.

Grishma Ritu
Following Vasant ritu, we have Grishma ritu, which is the summer. In 2025, this season begins on March 21st and extends till the end of May. In Grishma ritu, the climate becomes very hot and the skies are clear. The daylight is there almost till late evening, too. Many significant festivals like Ugadi and Rama Navami are celebrated in this phase. Grishma ritu is the season of mangoes, a favorite fruit for many people.

Varsha Ritu
“Varsha ritu” refers to the monsoon season in this country. In 2025, the day on which this season begins will be after the 20th of June; it is going to continue till the end of August. This ritu is characterized by heavy rainfall. Another striking aspect of the season is that the skies are cloudy most of the time.

Varsha ritu is in stark contrast to the preceding summer season. This means that we see a lot of greenery everywhere, which is uncommon in Grishma Ritu. Prominent festivals like Krishna Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, and Onam are celebrated during this three-month period.

Sharad Ritu
The intense heat of summer and the heavy monsoon rains significantly affect people’s outdoor activities. As a result, they eagerly anticipate a season with pleasant weather that allows them to venture outside. It is at this time that Sharad ritu, the Indian autumn, arrives. This season sees a decline in rainfall, with clear skies and cool evenings.

Overall, the conditions are perfect for people to compensate for the things that weren’t possible in Grishma ritu and Varsha ritu. The autumn of 2025 begins in the second half of August and progresses for two months.

Hemant Ritu
Hemant ritu is the season that comes right before winter. It’s when the pleasant climate of autumn gradually transforms into the cold of winter. Chilly weather is seen, on and off, but the severe cold of winter is still quite far. In 2025, Hemant Ritu begins after 20th October and continues until the end of December.

Shishir Ritu
As soon as Hemant ritu concludes, it marks the start of the Winter season or Shishir ritu. When the current year is seen, this ritu begins immediately at the start of the fourth week of December, and it lasts for nearly one month.

In the season, the temperatures drop very low and the resultant cold climate poses several challenges to people. They are compelled to wear clothes that offer protection against this chilly weather. There is heavy mist during the early mornings of this phase.

In the period starting with Sharad ritu and ending with Shishir ritu, many prominent festivals such as Navaratri, Diwali, and Makar Sankranti are observed
